Check your withholding tax: you may be overpaying

Many employees pay more tax than they should. Why? Employers sometimes apply the wrong withholding tax rate.

One of the most common issues involves parents: if your employer does not take your family situation into account (e.g. dependent children), the applied rate can be much higher than it should be.

Why do these errors happen?

  • Wrong tariff code chosen during declaration.
  • Failure to inform the employer of a change in family situation.
  • Not taking dependent children into account.
  • Applying the wrong cantonal rate for your place of residence.

Example

An employee living in the canton of Vaud, earning CHF 5,000/month, pays approximately:

  • CHF 419/month without children (tariff A0)
  • CHF 118.50/month with 2 dependent children (tariff C2)

If the wrong tariff is applied, this means CHF 300.50/month overpaid, or CHF 3,606/year lost.
