Check your withholding tax: you may be overpaying
Many employees pay more tax than they should. Why? Employers sometimes apply the wrong withholding tax rate.
One of the most common issues involves
parents: if your employer does not take your family situation into account (e.g. dependent children), the applied rate can be much higher than it should be.
Why do these errors happen?
- Wrong tariff code chosen during declaration.
- Failure to inform the employer of a change in family situation.
- Not taking dependent children into account.
- Applying the wrong cantonal rate for your place of residence.
Example
An employee living in the canton of Vaud, earning CHF 5,000/month, pays approximately:
- CHF 419/month without children (tariff A0)
- CHF 118.50/month with 2 dependent children (tariff C2)
If the wrong tariff is applied, this means CHF 300.50/month overpaid, or CHF 3,606/year lost.
How to check?
- Vaud : Retenue d’impôt à la source – Canton de Vaud
- Fribourg : Barèmes et calculs – Canton de Fribourg
These official resources allow you to compare your actual situation with the rate applied by your employer.
We offer a professional review of your payslip and tax rate. At the end, you will receive a document signed by our fiduciary that you can send directly to your employer to request the correction of your withholding tax.
For your appointment, please prepare:
- Your last 3 payslips
- Your marital status (married, single, separated, in a partnership, etc.) and if you are in a couple: does your partner work?
- If you have children:
- Indicate whether they live with you
- Their dates of birth
- For adult children (over 18): state if they are still studying
The process can be completed entirely online, by phone, or via videoconference. There is no need to come in person. We look forward to hearing from you and helping correct your taxes!
